This year is shaping up to be a pretty stellar time for sports – and we’re tuning into them all!  We’re going to give you a rundown on which 2014 sporting events you can look forward to, so call your friends, save these dates and join us to witness history in the making.

2014 Winter Olympics


This highly anticipated event is being held from the 7th to 23rd of February in Sochi, Russia. 2014 marks the 22nd year of the Winter Olympics and both Canada and Ireland will be there in fine form.

While the exact number of qualified athletes remains unknown until after the qualification lists are made public on January 20th, we do know some of the events we can look forward to seeing our athletes compete in. Both Canada and Ireland have competitors in Alpine skiing, Skeleton and Snowboarding. Canada will also be competing in biathlon, bobsled, cross-country skiing, curling (men's and women's), figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey (men's and women's), luge, short track speed skating, ski jumping, snowboarding and speed skating.

In total, the 2014 Winter Olympics will host 98 events in a total of 15 sports. This 2014 sporting event is particularly remarkable because it is the first time the Russian Federation has hosted the Olympics since the dissolution of the USSR. 
Spectators are in for a treat: Not only will they witness unparalleled athletic prowess, but they'll also enjoying taking in the captivating landscape of Sochi. This Russian resort extends along the spectacular shores of the Black Sea and the breathtaking mountains top off the visually stunning backdrop.

The 2014 NHL Playoffs begin on Wednesday, April 16 – that’s 3 days after the regular season has ended. You'll see 16 of the 30 league teams play for top spot. Here's how it works: The top 3 finishers of both divisions in each conference will make the playoffs, as well as 2 wildcard teams. We can’t wait to pull up a chair, pour a pint and cheer on our favorites.

Since it was founded in 1996, the North American based Major League Soccer (MLS) has delighted soccer fans around the world. The MLS playoffs are one of our favorite 2014 sporting events. We get to cheer on some national talent on the International stage. Out of the 19 MLS teams, 10 teams (comprised of the best 5 from each conference) will make the playoffs. Look for the MLS playoffs to start in late October of this year. We can't wait! This is a chance to see North American soccer at its finest.

The UK based EPL is perhaps the most-watched soccer league in the world, boasting a host of seriously dedicated fans. There are 20 teams in the EPL, and each team plays 38 games in total. The bottom 3 teams get relegated.  Since the event is sponsored by Barclay’s bank, it is commonly called the Barclay’s Premier League in the UK. 

The English Premier League (EPL) began this season in August 2013 and will end the season in April 2014. While there is no true playoff season for the EPL, the final leg of the competition might as well be! For a full list of games, check here

The EPL, as it exists today, was founded in 1992, though there were several incarnations of the league before. Today, it stands as a testament to great soccer, fanatical fans and definitely one of our top picks for 2014 sporting events. 


One of the 2014 sporting events that's closest to our hearts. The FAI Ford Cup is the biggest football competition in the Republic of fair Ireland. 2014 marks its 91st season. 40 teams will be competing this year and the games will begin in March 2014.

Pro 12

The RaboDirect Pro12 brings Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales together for an annual rugby scrimmage. This year's games began in January and end in May with matches held on Friday, Saturday and Sundays. The RaboDirect Pro12 is one of the major professional European football leagues that compete in the Heineken Cup.

The FIFA World Cup


This year marks the 20th FIFA World Cup, making it another one of the most anticipated 2014 sporting events. The action starts on June 12 and runs to July 14. 

Brazil is this year's proud host, making it the 2nd time the country has been home to this fantastic sporting event since it first hosted in 1950. 32 teams, including host nation Brazil, will compete in a series of 64 matches situated in 12 cities throughout Brazil.

The Six Nations Championship

Great rugby is just around the corner! The Six Nations Championship kicks off on Saturday, February 1st with Wales playing against Italy in Cardiff and England venturing over the water to challenge France in Paris. 

Sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), this annual tournament puts the skills of England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy to the test. We can’t wait!

The Setanta Sports Cup


The Setanta Sports Cup has been bringing the whole of Ireland together with classic football since 2005. This tournament features teams in the Leagues of Ireland from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The tournament will start on February 24th and end with the final on May 10th. 

Here are your dates on the first and second leg of the Cup. The semi-final and final contenders will be announced.
